The Art Gallery of NSW’s contemporary collection is truly international, encompassing Asian and Western as well as Australian art in all media. Key works by many artists, both established and emerging, have been acquired as examples of individual art practice and of movements in art since World War II. Internationally, the focus is on European work and the influence of conceptual art, nouveau realisme, minimalism and arte povera, in particular, while in Australia the emphasis is on themes that have been central to art practice in this country.
