There are more than 4000 photographs in the Art Gallery of NSW collection, celebrating the extraordinary diversity of the medium. Of these, 80% are Australian and half are from the last 30 years. We have major holdings of a wide variety of artists including Fiona Hall, Micky Allan, Mark Johnson, Max Pam, Lewis Morley, Tracey Moffatt and Bill Henson. As well as contemporary photography, Australian pictorialism, modernism and postwar photodocumentary are particular strengths, through artists such as Harold Cazneaux, Max Dupain and David Moore, complemented by international works.
